For the first time in 28 years, I don’t have a title or company email address. My last day at Farrell’s was Friday, March 29th, and today, April 1st, is my Day One.
I’m spending time this week reflecting on what we accomplished and enjoying some space to do that. It’s been an amazing journey.
I graduated from Yonsei University in 1995, came home and begged Lance Farrell for a job as the Head Instructor of the Farrell’s US Martial Arts studio. When Lance said, “I don’t know how I can pay you, but sure, I’ll hire you as our head instructor,” I thought he was joking. A few days later, the manager of the studio resigned and I was promoted to Head Instructor AND Manager. When sharing this news, Lance said, “Now I know how I can pay you!” What should have been a HUGE red flag truly excited me because I knew the challenge ahead.
We grew our small martial arts studio from 125 members to 450 in a short period of time. I made $14,000 my first year, had $15,000 in living expenses, but believed in what we were doing so I pressed on. I worked long hours and stayed disciplined to the plan we established, and over time, we grew our businesses and impacted many lives as I took on other roles within Farrell's.
We built a franchise business from scratch, enduring several road bumps along the way. We always managed to make a way when sometimes one didn’t exist.
While I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish with franchise sales and growth, I’m most proud of the thousands of leaders I’ve been able to train and influence over the past 20 years. I’m proud of the tens of thousands of students who have gone through the Farrell’s program that experienced transformational results through our efforts. We ALL put our hands on the pile and went the extra mile to help others succeed. Without the selfless attitude of the Farrell’s owners, instructors, and staff, none of this would have been possible.
What’s next? I’m not exactly sure. Today isn’t the day to figure that out.
Today’s the day to be grateful for so many who have blessed me and my family over the years with your support, wise counsel, and encouragement.
Much love and respect to you all ✌️
